Exciting days at Norwegian Ship Design

Successful projects, new developments and vacancies.

Last week we attended the naming ceremony of Bastø Electric, the world’s largest ferry built for full electric service. The ferry was built and delivered by Sefine Shipyard in December 2020. During all engineering and building stages we have had a very good cooperation with both the owner Bastø Fosen and the builder Sefine Shipyard, and we are happy to see proud faces from both parties remaining after 8 months in service.

Just a week earlier another Bastø Fosen ferry returned from yard after an extensive battery electric drive conversion. Bastø IV was retrofitted at Westcon Yard Ølen and will soon join Bastø Electric at Norway’s busiest ferry route Moss-Horten. Yet another vessel, Bastø VI will soon undergo the same conversion. When all three ferries enter into fully electric service CO2 emissions from Moss-Horten will be reduced with a massive 16 200 tonnes annually. All of us at Norwegian Ship Design are extremely proud of being part of the electrification project of Moss-Horten, which Bastø Fosen has initiated on its own initiative.

With Orca, the world’s first seagoing zero emission cargo ship, developed in close cooperation with Egil Ulvan Rederi, is currently well on track in the alternative design approval process. Hazid and related activites are well carried out and needed AIP documentation for class and authorities are nearly finalised. The project joint cargo owners, Felleskjøpet and HeidelbergCement are aiming for a contract early 2022.

Yet another fully electric newbuilding design from Norwegian Ship Design will soon be contracted. Torghatten Nord has won a 10 year contract for electric ferry service at Bognes-Lødingen with our design NSD120CFc. We look forward to tailor the concept in detail in close cooperation with Torghatten Nord, and later to see the vessel built and put into service from 1st of January 2024.

Last week MF Svelvik safely arrived in Norway after her journey back home from the building yard Sefine, Turkey. The vessel is a small, yet innovative, battery electric ferry with our design designation NSD30CF. Starting from 1st of January 2022, Bastø Fosen will service Svelvik-Verket with the new ferry. The crossing is short yet challenging due to a strong maelstrom.

We create energy efficient and future oriented ship designs, with zero or low emission solutions, for future oriented clients. If you are excited by the story above and have knowledge, commitment and a desire to join us in the maritime industry’s green transition, you may be a potential member of our team. Currently we are looking for a senior ship structural design analysis engineer. Follow this link for specific requirements and please share this post if you know a potential candidate.

Other candidates with high level skills from ship design development and engineering are welcomed to send us an open application for consideration.
